It was first a Lelegian settlement and was established at top of Bozdag mountain near the Kadıkalesi area. 

A portion of  the population had lost its importance by moving to Halicarnassus at the time of King Mausolus the 4th century BC. 

Nowadays its traces of Myndos still remain and the city of Myndos (Gümüslük) was strong against Alexander The Great's conquest. 

However they accepted to be surrendered to Alexander's commanders and continued to be the most important city port throughout the history.Caesar's murderers Brutus and Cassius used the city of Myndos as a military base. 

The ancient city walls and some towers can still be seen, however some structures such as the theatre, stadium did not remain according to the authors of ancient times. 

Gümüslük with its unique nature, wonderful fish restaurants and especially very well preserved Bodrum houses is one of the places that you need to visit today.
