Built on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Juno, the church we see today was built between 1697 and 1711. The Cathedral, found in the citadel, is a Baroque structure built entirely from limestone and designed by the Maltese Lorenzo Gafa' in the form of a Latin cross. A 1739 painting on the ceiling gives the illusion of a dome-like structure, even though in reality the ceiling is completely flat.

Another attraction at this Cathedral is the statue of the Assumption of Our Lady, made in Rome in 1897. Look for the masterpiece in perspective and trompe l'oeil
