It was built with the help of the Maltese government, the ecclesiastical authority, Maltese benefactors, and King Ferdinand of Spain, who was Catholic.
Built on a cave said to be the site where the Virgin Mary had allegedly appeared to a bird hunter, the Novitiate was founded at the Priory for both the Maltese and Sicilians, in 1609, secular Clerics could obtain a doctorate here
