The chief monumental building in Cospicua (Bormla) The collegiate church of the Immaculate Conception miraculously escaped the Second World War bombing that had destroyed most of this town.

It is rich in treasures and houses an exquisite work of art - the painting behind the high altar of the Madonna and Child, created in the 17th century by the painter Polidoro Veneziano of Abruzzo.

The first foundations of this church date back to 1584. It was then enlarged in 1637, and then once again a year later. It was finally completed and consecrated in 1732. Pope Pius VII conferred Collegiate status on the church in 1828.

It is thought that the statue of the Immaculate Conception found here dates back to 1689, and was sculpted by Sr. Maria De Domenicis, a Carmelite nun.
