Popularly known in Maltese as 'Ta Giezu' (of Jesus), and cared for by the religious order of the Friars Minor, this church was built in the early 1570s, following the design of Girolamo Cassar.

A number of Grand Masters made generous contributions towards the church, which now hosts various works of art.

One of the most impressive artefacts is what is known as the Miraculous Crucifix, created by the Sicilian friar, Umile Pintorno c. 1630.
